Presno, Lincoln
Artist born in Montevideo (Uruguay) on 6th January of 1917.
He studied drawing and painting at the Fine Arts Circle with Prof. Guillermo Laborde from 1933 to 1934, and with the master Joaquín Torres García from 1945 to 1947. He studied Bachelor of architecture.
He made tours of artistic training to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1957, to USA from 1964 to 1969, several to Argentina, Chile and Peru in 1959, and to Paraguay in 1964.
Painting and drawing Teacher at workshops in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. course at the Uruguayan Work University (UTU).
He was also official of the legislative branch at the art conservation section since 1964. Jury member at several contests, co-founder of “Group 8" of Uruguay (together with Oscar García Reino, Carlos Páez Vilaró and Alfredo Testoni) among others and did interior architecture and designer of furniture since 1936.
He was also member of jury at: Municipal Hall in 1957 (Uruguay), University Hall in 1958 (Uruguay), Carlos Maria Herrera Contest of the National Fine Arts School scholarship in 1957 (Uruguay), 1st. Biennial of the I.P.C. in 1970 (Uruguay), Biennale of young artists of the Culture Ministry in 1971, Southern Gallery Contest in 1959 (Argentina), Lions Convention Contest of Montevideo in 1980 (Uruguay).
It was art curator of the Legislative Palace of Montevideo and later Artistic Adviser of the same Institution (Uruguay).
He was the Uruguayan representative at 1st World Congress of Crafts made in New York in 1964 (USA). He joined the Committee of Fine Arts of the Pan-American Culture Institute since 1972.
He has made original upholstery in dyed lamb leather, having presented two collections on Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Washington D.C. (USA) in 1964.
He made 60 murals in various techniques (fresco, tempera, Byzantine mosaic, Venetian mosaic, escalla and pebbles of marble, metals such as: aluminium, copper and bronze) inside which are the murals of: "Building Horizontal" (Larrañaga and Italy Ave., Solano Antuña and Pedro Berro); "General Inspection of the Air Force" (Mendoza, Argentina); "Building Club Banco República" (Uruguay), etc.
He is the author of project and management of the monument to President John F. Kennedy that arose in the province of La Pampa, Quemú Quemú State (Argentina), work of 40 meters made with cement. Located at the junction of routes 1 and 12 opened on 29th May of 1967.
He had exhibitions in Montevideo, Punta del Este, Las Piedras, Colonia, Fray Bentos, Pan de Azúcar, San Jose and Florida (Uruguay); Bahía Blanca, Mar del Plata, Córdoba and Buenos Aires (Argentina); Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Sao Paulo - participating at I,II and IV Biennials (Brazil); Quito (Ecuador); Barcelona (Spain); Mexico D.F. (Mexico); Amsterdam (Netherlands); The Cairo and Alexandria (Egypt); Damascus (Syria); Prague (Czech Republic); Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Austin, TX, New York (USA) and Berlin (Germany).
Main Awards:
1945 - Bronze medal at Luis Caubarrere Prize with his oil painting "Sarandi Street" at the IX National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1946 - London Paris Award for his oil painting "The wagon" at X National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1946- Acquisition Prize for his watercolor "Area manufacturing Uruguayan" at the VII Municipal Painting Hall (Uruguay).
1952- Grand Prix, Gold Medal for his watercolor "Black mask" at the III Watercolor Hall (Uruguay).
1953- 2nd Prize, Silver Medal for his tempera and watercolor "Project for tapestry" at the 17th National Painting and Visual Arts Contest (Uruguay).
1954- Award for the illustration of an unpublished book, Bronze Medal for his watercolors "Illustrations for Hamlet" at 18th National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1955- Banco República Prize, Bronze Medal for his oil painting "Geometry" at 19th National Salon Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1955- 1st. Prize, Gold Medal for his watercolor on prepared wood "Still life" at 19th National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1956- Contract award for his oil painting "Composition" at the 8th Municipal Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1957- UTE Prize, Bronze Medal for his oil painting "Geometric construction" at 21st National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1958- Acquisition Prize for his oil painting "Composition by blue" at X Municipal Painting Hall (Uruguay).
1958- Award for the illustration of an unpublished book, Bronze Medal for his woodcut "Illustrations for a folder of reproductions", in collaboration with Raúl Pavlotzky at 22nd National Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1959- Painting Prize at 1st International Biennial of Modern Art Museum (Uruguay).
1959- Prize for his oil painting "Forms VI, Torres García’s Tribute" at 11th Municipal Painting Hall (Uruguay).
1960- Gold medal, Grand Painting Prize at Gallery Werthein Van Riel (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
1960- Acquisition Prize, for his oil painting "Space VII" at 12th Municipal Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1961- Acquisition Prize, copper sheet "Bas-relief Mural I" at 13th Municipal Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1962- Acquisition Prize, for his "Receptive red" tapestry in the XIV Municipal Painting Hall (Uruguay).
1964- Winner at the open Contest for a mural at Buenos Aires city, organized by Rubbers Gallery (Buenos Aires, Argentina).
1970- Acquisition Prize, for his oil painting "Form for two spaces" at 18th Municipal Painting Contest (Uruguay).
1970- "Latin America" Prize at 1st Painting Biennial, organized by Culture Pan-American Institute (Uruguay).
1971- 1st. Prize at 1st International Painting Biennial of Latin American culture Institute (Uruguay).
1984- 1st prize, Best Foreign Artist, at National Contest (Argentina).
Died in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1991.
