Salazar, Mercedes
Born in Punta del Este (Maldonado, Uruguay) in 1958.
1981- Join at Maldonado Workshop, managed by the Master Manolo Lima (Uruguay).
1982- Take part at the Workshop exhibitions at: La Fragata Patisserie, Artigas Square Information Center, Cuartel de Dragones of Maldonado, Culture House of San Carlos (Uruguay).
1983- Settle in Lima (Peru), where studied drawing and painting at Cristina Galvez Studio.
1984- With Maldonado Workshop exhibe at Tamarís Hotel and Artisans Association Center of Punta del Este (Uruguay).
1988-Return to Uruguay.
1990- Select at 5th Departamental Painting Contest of Maldonado, at drawing and painting categories (Uruguay).
1991- Exhibition at Didáctico Artiguista Museum of Maldonado (Uruguay).
1993- Plastical Arts Contest of San José, Centro Paz y Unión of Maldonado, Country Club of Punta de Este (Uruguay). Lawyers School of San Isidro, Buenos Aires (Argentina).
1994- Take part at the exhibition organized by Maldonado Council, on the occasion of the fraternity of Maldonado and Gramado Cities, realized in Brazil. 1st Individual Exhibition, guest by the Mazzoni Museum Commission (Uruguay).
Take part at the Plastical Artists Exhibition, sponsored by Maldonado Municipal Council at Didáctico Artiguista Museum on the occasion of XXX Anniversary of the Lions Club (Uruguay).
Take part in several exhibitions of Punta del Este and Piriápolis (Uruguay). 2nd Individual Exhibition, guest by the Culture Commission of Pan de Azúcar (Uruguay).
1995- Punta del Este Prize to the best artistical proposal of the year (Uruguay). 1st Regional Plastical Artists Contest, organized by Mazzoni Museum (Uruguay). Travelling Exhibition around argentinian cities us: Concepción, Colón, Concordia and Rosario, ending at the Uruguayan Embassy in Buenos Aires, sponsored by the Foreign Ministry (Argentina). Interior Plastical Artists Contest, organized by San José Museum(Uruguay). Small Size Contest at Club de Balleneros of Punta del Este, Police Circle of Maldonado, Nogaró Casino (Uruguay).
1996- Take part at the Regional Contest of Mazzoni Museum, on the occasion of the San Fernando Cathedral Centenary (Uruguay). 1st Plastical Artists Contest, organized by the Departamental Board of Maldonado (Uruguay). International Art Exhibition at Patio de Cambalache, Uruguayan Artists Exhibition in Porto Alegre (Brazil), sponsored by the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry. Travelling Exhibition around brazilian cities of Bagé District (Brazil) ending at Melo Museum (Uruguay).
1997- Acquisition Prize at the Interior Plastical Artists Contest of San José Museum (Uruguay). Patio del Cambalache. Centro español de Maldonado (Uruguay).
1998- 1st Latin American "Panche Be" Painting Biennial of Porto Alegre (Brazil). Patio de Cambalache. Spanish Center of Maldonado (Uruguay).
1999- Individual Exhibition at Centro Paz y Unión of Maldonado and Meliá Hotel of Punta del Este (Uruguay).
2000- Individual Exhibitions in Montevideo, at Enrique Fynn Hall and Vaz Ferreira Hall of the National Library, sponsored by the Education and Culture Ministry (Uruguay). Take part in several exhibitions among others organized by the Art Circle of Punta del Este and La Fragua Galery (Uruguay). With the "Tango" thematic, take part in several travelling exhibitions organized by the Culture Direction, on the occasion of 5th Annual Meeting of the National Tango Accademy of Uruguay.

Los motivos "históricos" que elige Mercedes Salazar indican de donde proceden los pasos que hoy da su obra -culta y clebrante- de la gran tradición de la pintura veneciana. Con un concepto claro, definido, subraya el artificio que sirve de sustento a su hacer; mediante diversas técnicas que hace confluír armoniosamente enriquece el plano con tensiones puramente pictóricas, construyendo mediante la línea neta o tenue, pero mayormente con el color al que hace protagónico cuando conviene a toda la obra, o lo emplea ricamente vibrado al servicio de la forma, o lo usa con una austeridad concurrente al propósito general. Organiza con sabiduría y sutileza los espacios, creando universos estéticos en los que la fuerza se alía a la gracia de un modo que le es enteramente propio. Para ello se vale de múltiples recursos que van desde la buscada rugosidad del soporte, a distintos materiales, llegando hasta el gofrado que, bien usados -como lo hace- enriquecen la superficie llevándola a la máxima expresividad. Y, aún más, más allá del entramado de los elementos plásticos, hace sobrevolar intenciones reflexivas de hondura psicológica, que la hacen más abierta y comunicante.
