Alvira, Andrés
Born in the city of Maldonado (Uruguay), on September 6, 1965.
In 1986 he began his training in drawing and painting at the Municipal School of Plastic and Visual Arts, where he was taught by Master Carlos Tonelli, a disciple of Luis Solari and Edgardo Ribeiro.
After leaving the Plastic Arts School, he continued working as a self-taught artist for several years and until he was sure of his work, he did not carry out any exhibition. There were many years of rehearsals, learning, trips to museums, and destructuring of the rigidity left by the School.
Parallel to plastic arts, he studied Business Administration, and worked in the family business, "Cuadrería y venta de láminas de arte", directing the art section. During the years 1995 to 2001, she traveled to Artexpo New York (USA). He continued in the family business where they opened an exhibition hall in which he is in charge of the curatorship. He organized exhibitions of Carlos Tonelli, Manolo Lima, Wilson Amaral, Edgardo Ribeiro, Miguel Battegazzore, Ferreira Santos, Marta Nieves and several local artists.
He made exhibitions to Blanca Minelli, a native of the area, who to this day is a great friend, was a student of Gurvich and Augusto Torres, and through Blanca he met Edgardo Ribeiro, who also gave him a lot of encouragement. Ribeiro insisted that she show him what she was doing, until one day she took courage and brought him some cardboards, and with a strong voice and raised index finger said: "you have conditions, if you don't paint you will be a bitter old man", words that remained engraved in his memory forever. He still has the painting that Ribeiro gave him when he made an exhibition in his living room. They kept in touch and from time to time I took him samples of his painting.
In 2012 he moved his studio to the second floor of the shop where he has a large space to work, allowing himself to do so in larger formats as well, which is a new challenge. For Alvira art is movement, it never stops and you never get there, because getting there is stopping, you allow yourself to be investigating and trying out techniques without being pigeonholed into anything, you let everything flow and you allow yourself to be influenced by the emotions and experiences of the moment.
